Woodworker creates memories from old Mount Baker High bleacher seats
Looking Glass Laser uses an art laser engraver to make a variety of unique wood items, including photo frames, tile, business cards and plaques. The company is committed to using woods grown and harvested using sustainable forest practices or from salvaged wood. Owner Jon Westdal also co-owns another business, An-West Inc., which makes furniture.

900-pound sphere promotes sustainability
Among the ordinary assortment of tools and scrap wood inside Mitch Fry’s workshop is something less common: a 900-pound wooden sphere with an 8-foot diameter made from recycled wood he and his son collected.
Mitch, 56, a Scottsdale resident, is part of a growing movement in sustainable art, said Clark Olson, co-owner of Bonner David Galleries, an art gallery in Scottsdale, and jury member on The Contemporary Forum.
Julie Anand, assistant professor of photography at ASU, said sustainable art has been an emerging movement since the late 1960s. These artists are expanding awareness about the human impact on the environment, she said.

Softening Modern Design
After years of slick, clean lines dominating the design world, I find it refreshing to see little organic "flaws" showing.
Using reclaimed wood, whether it served a previous life as a beam holding up a house or as part of another piece of furniture, appeals to me because of its quirky dings and dents. It shows me depth of character, like a wise elder.

One of the pieces in Many Moons Design's "mixed species" collection, it features a colorful lineup of 1-inch-wide stripes of many kinds of wood, including white oak, red gum, cherry, wormy chestnut, beech, maple, elm, sycamore, poplar and walnut.
